Guánica

On January 6, 2020, Guánica was struck by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake that knocked out power to the community’s 17,000 residents and damaged more than 3,000 homes and businesses, forcing families to live in outdoor tents. In the disaster’s aftermath, the firefighters distributed stores of water, cleared roads, conducted urban search and rescue, and provided emergency medical services at the local health clinic.

For months, earthquakes would continue on a daily basis, straining local recovery efforts and recking havoc on both the power-grid, as well as the transportation and communication infrastructure. Now with reliable, renewable power, Guánica’s firefighters can protect their communities from the threat of earthquakes, storms, and wildfires.
